About our Art

Kate Adams

The art I presented for House in the Rain is a diary of visual and emotional experiences using drawing, painting , prose and poetry as a means of expression. These pieces represent my own stories and those of the wider society. A small painting, Prison Strike depicts officers gathering outside a local prison to protest about staff cuts and violence while prisoners remain locked inside. House in the Rain, the title piece tells of a place revisited in an attempt to resolve a continuing sadness. Probably each one of us has their own House in the Rain, particularly those who are displaced and remain marginalised. Art alone cannot bring down the injustice of Capitalism. It is crucial however in allowing freedom of expression so that we can truly be ourselves, bringing joy and colour to our lives. An inspiration against conformity.

House in the Rain

I spend my days searching for the house.

There is nothing to do but think

of things that have vanished:

the sliding doors of a hospital,

the white taxis gathered like birds

and a girl in a headscarf watching

the rain come down on a tiled roof.

I create art work that can be used by activists in their campaigns : postcards, leaflets and posters. My art is inspired by Marxist ideology in a fluid way that I hope will liberate and inspire people. Art can’t create revolutionary situations but can articulate a hope for a more democratic, compassionate world.
